Join Dr. Michaela Watrelot for a ten-week lecture program strolling through centuries of history, going from the Renaissance to the Contemporary, and tackling how Art defined and captured their reality.
Hosted at XVA Gallery, our ten-week program features a series of ten art history lectures plus a Christmas-themed one, exploring the highlights of different art movements, the most influential artists and their masterpieces. Starting on Wednesday 19th October from 19.00h to 20.30h, each lecture features 75 minutes of class + 15 minutes for Q&A and open discussion. With drinks and refreshments upon arrival, every session can be taken individually, choosing according to one’s own interest.
With the Renaissance as a starting point, we will be deep-diving into each era’s artistic representation of its time. Investigating the origins of each current, the lectures will focus on aspects such as the power of light, perception and form. We will gain insights to the techniques, meaning and development of painting through Europe. Progressing through the course, we will define why some movements evolve into new ones. For instance, how Post-impressionism was born on the foundations of impressionism claiming new techniques, new ideals, and new insights to portray subject matter.
Following a timeline through Cubism and Abstract Impressionism, we will determine how the art scene changes and what played a role in the development of these new approaches to art. The World Wars and the development of new scientific theories will become the epicenter of the artist’s emotional response, and their visual representations. Leading us to question what art is today, thus opening the doors to the contemporary approach passing by minimalism and the conceptual.
