Dior just debuted the ninth installment of its Lady Art Project, and the bags are as magically made as ever.
Each year, artists come together with the French luxury house to put their own creative spin on its classic Lady Dior handbag, which was created in 1995 and named after Princess Diana. For the latest reveal, 11 creatives from around the world (including China, Peru, Korea, the United States, and more) put their touch on the classic purse. Each one represents the identity and artistic creativity of the artist behind its design.
Alabama-born artist Danielle McKinney, for example, made her Lady bag about the private sphere of female characters, per Dior’s press release. She embodied this through painted textures and crumpled backdrops to evoke movement and dimension. Hand-embroidery brings alive motifs like a butterfly. These cultural and personal elements are incorporated into the designs across artists, giving each handbag a special significance.
Since its inception in 2016, the Dior Lady Art Project has partnered with an impressive talent roster, offering artists creative reins to revisit the bag, become part of Dior’s history, and offer some very lucky customers a one-of-a-kind accessory. Others featured this year include Sara Flores, Jeffrey Gibson, Huang Yuxing, Liang Yuanwei, Duy Anh Nhan Duc, Hayal Pozanti, Faith Ringgold, Vaughn Spann, Anna Weyant, and Woo Kukwon.
Fashion enthusiasts know Lady Dior’s timeless elegance all too well, but the latest edition of these artful bags add a wonderful touch of something new. The collection will be available to shop this November in select boutiques.
