When autumn settles in and grapes ripen to perfection, Georgians celebrate Rtveli—a festival of harvest, food, music, and togetherness. This year, we were lucky enough to experience Rtveli right in the heart of Almaty at the Georgian restaurant Manana, and it turned out to be one of the most vibrant, joy-filled evenings I can remember.

From the moment we reached the restaurant, we loved the vibrant atmosphere and the rich decor featuring fall fruit and loads of grapes. Manana had prepared a true Rtveli celebration: there was live music that stirred the soul, a dazzling dance show that filled the room with energy, and—my personal favorite—grape-stomping right outside the restaurant. Yes, guests were invited to dance in the grapes, just as tradition dictates, and it was as fun as it sounds.

Of course, no Georgian celebration is complete without food, and the menu that evening was nothing short of a feast. My husband was in culinary heaven with the array of meat dishes, each grilled and spiced to perfection. As for me, I fell head over heels for the traditional khinkali.

At Manana, they come both steamed and fried, and what delighted me most is that you can order them by the piece—perfect for tasting without overindulging (though I admit I kept ordering “just one more”).

Adding a whimsical touch to the evening was Manana’s unexpected talisman: a beautifully dressed sheep that strolled freely through the restaurant like an honored guest. It was impossible not to smile at the sight, and somehow, it fit perfectly into the joyful, slightly magical atmosphere of Rtveli.

Another highlight was opening a traditional Georgian Kvevri and inviting the guests to try the wine. I love how Manana gave homage to the historic Georgian winemaking technique and let us try something new.

By the end of the night, between the laughter, the music, the dancing, and the incredible food, I felt like we had traveled straight to Georgia without ever leaving Almaty. Manana is more than just a restaurant—it’s a celebration of culture and hospitality. For any foodie passing through the city, it should absolutely be on your radar.
