Wallace Chan

Looking for Another Way of Seeing: Notes from Shanghai

I remember standing inside one of Wallace Chan’s monumental installations and feeling slightly frustrated by it. The work was designed as a vessel, something between sculpture, architecture and an imagined cosmic interior. You could enter it, move around it, look through layers of metal and reflected light. Nearby, another even larger structure seemed to promise the same physical immersion, yet remained inaccessible.

Wallace Chan: Inside a Thinking Material

The work of Wallace Chan resists easy categorization. It moves between sculpture and jewelry, physics and metaphysics, material precision and philosophical speculation. Over the past decades, he has not only redefined what contemporary jewelry can be, but has also constructed an entirely personal language – one in which gemstones become vessels of time, and matter itself seems to hesitate between presence and disappearance.
