For the 2023 edition of Art Basel’s premier global fair in the Americas, Art Basel will bring together 277 leading international galleries to present the highest quality artworks across all media – from painting and sculpture to photography and digital works – by artists ranging from early-twentieth-century Modern pioneers to contemporary practitioners. Nearly two-thirds of this year’s galleries hail from North and South America, joined by an exceptional array of exhibitors from Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The fair will welcome 24 newcomers to the Miami Beach show, with three entering directly into the main Galleries sector: Galerie Minsky (Paris), Ortuzar Projects (New York), and Weinstein Gallery (San Francisco). Six galleries will join the fair for the first time in Nova, the sector for galleries presenting new works by up to three artists; 8 galleries in Positions, hosting young galleries showcasing ambitious solo presentations by emerging international artists; and 7 galleries in Survey, dedicated to galleries highlighting artistic practices of historical relevance.

In addition, the fair will host compelling presentations across its special sectors:
- Curated by Magalí Arriola, Mexico City-based curator and the Director of Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo, Meridians will feature 19 large-scale projects which transcend the dimensions of a traditional art fair booth.
- Kabinett – a mainstay section of the Miami Beach show, showcasing thematic group exhibitions, art- historical showcases, and solo presentations – will return, giving exhibitors the opportunity to present concisely curated installations within their main booths.
- Programmed by curator Emily Butler and free to the public, the fair will again stage Conversations, a series of live debates bringing together today’s most inspiring cultural figures. The renowned program will feature thought leaders exchanging on the key topics shaping the world of art and culture.

For the first time at the renewed MBCC, the fair will present an enhanced show layout, with the organization of five distinct plazas. The plazas are enhanced for improved visitor flow and seating, eating, and drinking rest points in the fair hall.

Art Basel’s incoming Director, Miami Beach, Bridget Finn, will attend
the 2023 edition in Miami Beach, which is spearheaded in the interim by de Bellis.
Upon assuming her role this autumn,
Finn will lead the direction of the Miami Beach show in 2024.
Galleries
The show’s main sector will feature 222 of the world’s leading galleries, showcasing painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, photography, video, and digital works of the highest quality, including 10 exhibitors presenting editioned works, prints, and multiples.
8 galleries that previously exhibited in Nova, Positions, or Survey will graduate into the main sector, showcasing the full range of their program, including: Antenna Space (Shanghai), Ruth Benzacar Galeria de Arte (Buenos Aires), Company Gallery (New York), Anat Ebgi (Los Angeles), Larkin Erdmann Gallery (Zürich), Fitzpatrick Gallery (Paris), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), and Nicola Vassell (New York).
Four galleries will participate in the main sector with joint booths. Parrasch Heijnen Gallery from Los Angeles and Franklin Parrasch Gallery from New York will co-present an exhibition celebrating the legendary Brockman Gallery, operating in Los Angeles from 1967-1990 and the first major contemporary gallery run by and for Black artists. The presentation is organized with concerted cooperation and curatorial input from Alonzo Davis, one of Brockman Gallery’s founders. Likewise sharing a booth, Galerie Minsky from Paris and Weinstein Gallery from San Francisco will present a solo show of Argentine-Italian surrealist artist Leonor Fini, featuring paintings, never-before-exhibited drawings of theater and opera sets from the artist’s personal collection, as well as a selection of sculptures including masquerade ball masks and Fini’s 1939 Anthropomorphic Wardrobe.

Nova
Dedicated to galleries presenting works created within the last three years by one, two, or three artists, the Nova sector will feature 21 presentations from 22 galleries. Highlights include: two never-before-exhibited sculptures by Puerto Rican artist Daniel Lind-Ramos from the artist’s María series, presented by The Ranch (New York) and mapping the critical language of Ramos’s assemblage practice characterized by towering anthropomorphic figures and totems composed of salvaged objects and organic materials from his hometown of Loíza, the largest Afro-Caribbean enclave in Puerto Rico; a new series of oil and spray paintings by Egyptian, Basel-based artist Basim Magdy, the first staging of his paintings in a U.S. context, presented by fair newcomer Gypsum Gallery (Cairo); a selection of paintings by American artist Matt Bollinger, tenderly realized, depicting an alienated middle America, with a recurring cast of inhabitants in ‘Holmes, Missouri,’ a fictional township constructed by the artist, presented by Dublin gallery mother’s tankstation; and, analyzing American social spaces through portraiture, a series of oil paintings on wood panel by Los Angeles-based artist Shizu Saldamando, interspersed with the artist’s steel and Japanese Washi paper flower works, presented by Charlie James Gallery (Los Angeles). The sector will also include a joint booth by London galleries Arcadia Missa and Soft Opening, known for providing a platform for queer feminist discourses.

Positions
This year’s Positions sector will feature 16 standalone presentations by emerging artists from around the world. Highlights include: a presentation of Brazilian artist Allan Weber, known for his work on everyday life in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, including a new photo series shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Weber worked as a mobile food app delivery driver, presented by Galatea (Rio de Janeiro); four works by Mexican artist Andrew Roberts made especially for the fair and exploring the ocean as a geopolitical space of violence, including a three-channel video work, in which an assembly of computer generated and animated sea monsters hauntingly sing to their extinction, an animatronic sculpture depicting an aquatic humanoid creature in a state of deep sleep, and two large scale bas-reliefs made of silicone, presented by Pequod Co. (Mexico City); a new series of photographs by American artist Texas Isaiah, in which transmasculine, nonbinary, and gender- expansive subjects act in a lush landscape, shown alongside an altar installation dedicated to Ki’tay Davidson, a Black transmasculine disability justice advocate, and Blake Brockington, the first openly trans high school homecoming king in North Carolina, presented by Residency Art Gallery (Inglewood); and an installation of mixed-media wall and floor sculptures by Brazilian artist Mano Penalva, in dialogue with the wooden beaded backrests used by professional drivers in Brazil and various parts of the world, presented by Llano (Mexico City).

Survey
Featuring works created before 2000, Survey will host 17 galleries. Highlights include: a tribute presentation to Liliana Maresca, the iconic Argentine sculptor, painter, and performance artist who was highly influential to the country’s artistic scene in the 1980s and 1990s, presented by Rolf Art (Buenos Aires); a solo presentation of Karen Finley, Karen Finley: REDACTED, centered on the artist’s seminal interactive installation, GO FIGURE, which she installed at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 1997 during her protracted legal battle with the National Endowment for the Arts, and the subsequent presentation of which at the Whitney Museum was canceled in the wake of the artist’s Supreme Court defeat, presented by Freight+Volume (New York); a solo booth of American artist Vivian Browne’s landmark abstract Africa paintings, made following an influential trip to Nigeria in 1971, presented by Ryan Lee (New York); and a series of eight erotically charged paintings of factory laborers from the estate of Swiss artist Rudolf Maeglin, made between 1932 and 1948 and never-before-seen in the U.S., including two rare large-scale works, in which the artist’s unique provocation of gender reverberates with urgency, presented by Meredith Rosen Gallery (New York).
