Drawing inspiration from Disney’s iconic 1940 animated movie of the same name, Desmit’s unique sculptural style offers a harmonious complementarity between contrasts like freedom and control, tradition and innovation, motion and stillness. Influenced by masters like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Philippe Starck, Desmit’s work promises a mesmerizing experience.
His Excellency, Antoine Delcourt, Ambassador of Belgium in the UAE, graced the exclusive preview held on October 24th at Desmit’s studio with his presence as the distinguished Guest of Honour, showing his support for Desmit’s rise in the art world. Opening the doors to his private space, Quentin Desmit has granted us a unique glimpse into his personal world; his home, his studio and his workspace, where creativity comes to life. It is indeed a privilege to be welcomed into the intimacy of the artist to witness the creative process, and to build an emotional connection with the art on display.
At the core of this collection lies the paintbrush, an ancient tool of creation, rich in history, which the artist has reimagined here as the subject of art. After studying Fine Arts in London, Quentin Desmit received another degree in Interior and Spatial Design at the prestigious Chelsea College of Art and Design. Desmit’s architectural expertise is evident in the meticulous crafting of his sculptures, designed to be appreciated from every angle. The oversized paintbrush, as seen in the piece “Shaping Our Future,” creates the element of surprise and of sublime.
“Most people express themselves with words, I express myself with colours and curves,” says artist Quentin Desmit. Overcoming dyslexia as a child, Desmit spent over thirty years experimenting with various mediums until he found his voice in this form of expression. Desmit communicates through vivid colors and expressive curves, bypassing conventional words. Since his earlier works, these curves have consistently defined his style. It’s what he calls ‘The Curvism,’ a movement that he continues to evolve and expand.
Resin offers Desmit great flexibility and freedom in his movements, allowing him to have a certain control over the material in order to capture the fluidity of the paintbrush flow in a timeless sculpture. Always in constant pursuit of development, Desmit has incorporated wooden pieces into his collection that allows him to work with noble materials that align with his ecological values. For instance, the artwork titled “Wildwood Embrace” portrays a curve captured in a beautiful piece of wood emerging from a block of concrete. This piece is powerful, symbolizing nature reclaiming its place in the constantly evolving urban landscape shaped by human hands.
When arriving in Dubai in 2012, Desmit was naturally captivated by Arabic calligraphy for the graceful, dancing flow of the letters. Their rhythmic movements resonated with his sensibilities, leading him to use calligraphy as a visual medium. His sculptures echo this calligraphic essence, inviting us to sense their rhythm. An artistic collaboration with a calligraphy artist promises to be an enriching venture for all involved.
