Junk Kouture, an Irish born start up, was formed in 2010, capturing the imagination of over 100,000 students to date. With an aim to empower young people in education, it offers the Recycled Fashion Competition for young people aged 12-18.
Bringing together aspiring artists, designers and engineers, the competition encourages them to envision, design and model haute couture styled from everyday junk.
Incorporating elements of sustainability, fashion, art, design, engineering and performing arts, a Junk Kouture creation can be inspired by anything; but the golden rule is that the outfit must be made from 100% recycled materials, for the sake of sustainability.
This is a fashion competition like no other. It will continue to tour over the next three years. Beginning in January 2021, the initial season will be held digitally in five cities around the world: Abu Dhabi, London, Milan, New York and Paris.
“It is a hugely exciting time for Junk Kouture. Having been forced to reimagine what Junk Kouture had become over the past ten years, our move to the digital space, coupled with our international expansion plans allowed us to accelerate bringing Junk Kouture to new audiences throughout the world,” says Founder, Troy Armour.
“The programme promotes the empowerment of young people, by challenging them to be creative and resourceful in the design process. Our community is built of like-minded creatives, and we can’t wait to see what the young people of UAE bring to the competition in 2021 and beyond.”
More than just a competition, Junk Kouture is a community, where like-minded young adults can come together in a celebration of their creativity and uniqueness. By providing this welcoming and inspiring platform for artistic talent, passionate creatives can really unleash their skills and show the world what they’ve got.
